I've Gone Green!

Posted by: Patricia Paul

It was time for me to finally replace my automobile.   I had been driving my car for ten years, and had over 100,000 miles on it.  I do, after all, drive clients around with me.  I decided to look into some of the newer technology.  I was surprised on many scores:  The options, the luxuries, the price tags, and more.

Well, I ended up buying a Toyota Camry Hybrid sedan.  It gets great mileage (they claim 33 in the city, though I have experienced even better than that), and it is a low emission vehicle.   The car shows me what mileage I'm getting as I'm driving around, and rates the effectiveness of the trip for fuel economy at the end.   I love seeing that "excellent" when I shut off the engine.

The comfort and luxuries of the car are wonderful!   I can drive around in style, and feel good about minimizing the effects to our ecology, while spending less on gas.   Now I want to see what other ways I can continue to "go green".  Please feel free to post any of your green ideas on this blog.  I'd love to hear from you!

When I came to Tucson, 5 years ago, I was surprised that this town was not using their "free energy" -the sun. I guess I was expecting solar panels on each roof. Nevertheless a couple of years ago, people did not give Hybrid Cars a real chance, as we moved forward, almost every car manufacturer has at least one of these cars on the market. My point is, the more we show interest in solar energy, the less expensive it will become. We definitely will read more up on this and hope to make some changes in the near future.
Tips for everybody's pocket:
Use energy efficient light bulbs, seal your windows and doors, turn down your AC a couple of degrees when you are not at home, the same rule applies for the heater. Plant some trees on the east west and west side of your house, this will give your house a little break from the sun and your AC does not need to work so hard. Install a drip system in your yard instead of using the water hose. Do you recycle? Many people in town and in the county do have their recycle bin already but a lot of people don't want to spend the extra money, well, here is the solution: There are 14 recycle centers in Tucson; one is probably in your neighborhood or on your way to work. For more info please check out http://www.tucsonaz.gov/tucsonrecycles/
Paper or plastic - common question at the register - why don't you bring your own bags? Watch what you pour down the drain, this starts already with choosing your cleaning supplies - are they safe?? Read the labels if they are biodegradable, non toxic, safe for your kids and pets.
More Energy efficient links can be found at http://www.tucsonelectric.com/Green/
These are all things that can be easily integrated in our daily lives, if we learn and teach the next generation how to do it right, maybe Mother Earth will stick around a little longer and healthier.
